Berlin's Annual Festival of Lights

Tourists visiting the German city of Berlin are in for a special treat. For the next two weeks, the city's major landmarks, as well as hotels and embassies will be lit up with colorful lights in celebration of the fourth annual Festival of Lights.

The festival, which runs from October 14th to October 26th, also includes firework displays, colorful light projections, numerous cultural events, street parties and concerts.

Restaurants in the area also participate by offering special deals.

The 2008 festival also has a number of new events planned, including a 7.5 km light run, which starts in Berlin's historic district and ends at the brightly lit up central railway station. The organizers have also asked people all over the world to send out messages and wishes, all of which will be displayed on Berlin's most famous landmark - the Brandenburg Gate.

Several competitions have been organized, including one for the best-lit hotel and another for the best photograph of the event, by an amateur photographer. The Park Inn Alexanderplatz hotel is even offering three lucky couples a free wedding on its 37th floor, overlooking the glowing city. All they have to do is submit a funny, interesting or romantic story of how they met.
