How do you recycle 1.5 million beer bottles? Build a Buddhist temple of course - At least that's what monks in the Siskat province in Thailand have done, and the resulting structure is not only Eco-friendly, but also incredible looking.
The building efforts at the Wan Lan Kuad or Temple of a Million Bottles complex began in 1984, when the monks began to collect beer bottles. Now, almost 25 years and 1.5 million beer bottles later, the complex comprises of 20 buildings that include a Temple, crematorium, a hall, water tower, tourist bathrooms, prayer rooms and a number of living quarters for the monks.
The structures are built around a concrete core of cement, which is then lined up with green and brown beer bottles, creating buildings that are beautiful, functional and easy to clean and maintain.
The recycling efforts does not end at the bottles. The monks have cleverly used the bottle caps to create various murals that adorn the inside of the temple.
And now that they have the formula down, they are not about to stop. The monks say they will keep constructing more buildings as they collect additional bottles. Now if only the rest of the World would follow their example!
