First there were the curvy cucumbers, then came heart-shaped watermelons and now . . . Baby Buddha shaped pears.
The funky-shaped fruit was developed by Gao Xianzhang, a Chinese farmer in Hebia, Northern China, who decided to create the exotic-looking fruit, after he noticed people paying extra for odd-shaped watermelons.
It took him six years to develop the perfectly shaped mold, inside which these pears grow, but it definitely seems worth it. Despite the hefty price tag of $10USD per pear, they have been extremely popular in his village, where people consider them good-luck charms.
This year, he has managed to harvest 10,000 of these amazingly cute pieces of fruit. He is now hoping to export them to Europe and is currently awaiting the appropriate approvals.
Maybe some day he will be able to grow enough to send to other parts of the world too!
